How do you know you want someone for who they are and not because of the comfort they offer?

You do,... the other person doesn't.
And they will never accept the fact that its for the first reason.

One should ask this from heart, as heart always speak true, be it logical, beneficial, harmful or insane. I don't think so you can deny the fact that you always seek comfort from someone whom you count at your side, afterall who wants to face barriers when you have other choices as well.
BUT Love is the only connection which can give you thousand reasons to be there with someone (with or without comfort, it doesn't matter).
If you have 'love' for someone then instead of seeking comfort for yourself you will try to be a source of his comfort by easing his way, as his comfort is your's.

As a substitute, evoke all of your fears, list them out, if somewhere you find some connection of that fear with him, then certainly this is COMFORT you are wishing to have with him.

For this someone said greatest achievement is selflessness..
